The organic farmers discover the export business

HANS GMEINER
hums The organic market in Austria. The growth rates are not only for Hofer, who joined last year big, but also for savings and Rewe in the double-digit percentage range. "Now, do we define and abroad," announces four Rudi belly, chairman of the Bio Austria.

Austria sees itself as organic but number one in Europe, the export volume is around € 60 million so far, however modest. What will be different?
Four Belly: Until now lone road. To be truly successful abroad, you have to build in the organic sector an Austria identity. We have the best conditions for it. Then it is set up. It is preliminary work for a common brand and a common Market presence. It should be signaled: Since Austria is behind it.

After the major problems in the marketing of organic grain in the previous year, there is now a new model. Everything perfect?
Four Belly: The farmers now have more contacts. With all the major brands, there is collaboration on the basis of Bio-Austria-quality standards. Even for buyers of Biofuttergetreide, the conditions are better to be able to buy cheaper. There are several providers and not just one, on which everything runs. We also want to push the business to Bauer Bauer stronger. This should also signal to the feed manufacturer have.

The disputes are settled but not yet revealed. There Klagsdrohungen a society that is majority owned by two Bio-Austria-country organizations. They are directed against Bio-Austria-farmers, who allegedly did not fulfill their contracts. Have the help expected?
Four Belly: We can only explain the legal situation. I referred the matter to the national companies of Lower Austria and Burgenland. The are the primary shareholder of the organic quality cereal company, which claims threatens.

Just as with conventional products, there are also complaints about organic growing price pressure in the trade. Disappointed that?
Four Belly: Yes of course. The organic market is dominated by three very strong brands. And if organic growth or whether it is good bio decide, not the farmers or processors, but that is decided in the boardrooms of chain stores. The debate over whether this is good or bad, helps us further.

EU farm reform is entering a decisive phase. Organic farmers also have the fear?
Four Belly: basically have the same concerns as non-organic farmers and organic farmers. I believe that Austria but good especially for organic is the way and it would be fatal to leave that way.

Can the influence Austria alone?
Four Belly: ÖPUL The environmental program is a crucial area. Depending on how you set as the focus, because you can very much influence. Some rethinking, I consider it important. Certain payments in the market no relevance, but rather supply character, should be designed as a precursor for the introduction of organic farming.

In view of rising commodity prices reflect the growing concern about the food supply of the world population. Comes as organic farming, with its lower yields under no pressure?
Four Belly: This is a great fallacy. Of course, the organic farming make a significant contribution to improving the food supply because it's all about environmentally friendly agriculture, that operates in cycles and ensure that people can create without dependence on fertilizers and petroleum food - not only for themselves, but maybe for two or three others. But primarily, access to seeds and to land is regulated, so you can get ahead in the feed the world one step, because we must not forget that 50 percent of the starving population lives in rural areas.
